Writing Quest Part 8 – Distractions

It’s week 8 already and so far I’ve written 4 chapters of Quest. This week I’ve managed to get 1 chapter finished off and have been making progress on my other work in progress the Nightblade.

A big issue that I often suffer from whilst writing is the dreaded distraction. I cannot be the only writer out there that struggles with remaining focused. Aside from locking myself away somewhere and pulling the plug on the internet and TV I always seem to get distracted. Writing is a solitary past time and I am always amazed at how other writers, despite having children, working full-time jobs etc are able to hammer out their works at such impressive speeds.

The solution to this is, of course, to have stronger resolve. Resist those temptations, hell, turn off the internet (curse you social media distractions!)  It’s easier said than done to simply ignore everything around you and focus solely on your writing. If I was able to live off the income from my books then yes that would be possible, but like most other writers a full-time job and all that comes with it is a necessity. Writing is also my career (I’m a copywriter) so after an 9-hour shift it can be difficult to be motivated enough to get home and get cracking on with my own writing.

To tackle this I’ve set some targets and objectives for myself to reach. Starting next week, I will aim to finish one chapter of both Nightblade and Quest per week until they are both completed. Other plans for this year includes editing and getting the second Terran Defenders novel ready for release.
